1. To leave the Sunnah rakat’s intentionally. One shouldn’t treat it lightly because the reward for praying our sunnah rakats are great!
“Narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever prays twelve rak’ahs during the night and day, a house will be built for him in Paradise: four before Zuhr and two after, two rak’ahs after Maghrib, two rak’ahs after ‘Isha’ and two rak’ahs before Fajr prayer.” (Muslim 004:1581)
The Prophet (SAW) warned: “Let those who raise their gaze up during prayer stop doing so, or else their sights would not return to them. i.e. lose their eyesight].” (Muslim)
3. Spreading your arms in the salah and touching your elbows on the floor. Arms should be raised off the floor. Rasoolullah SAW has described people who do this to be like dogs, in some narations he SAW said they were like camels.
The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Let not one of you support himself on his forearms (in sujood) like the dog. Let him rest on his palms and keep his elbows away from his body.” (Sahih Muslim)
6. Yawning in the salah because this is from shaytaan. Mohammed SAW said if you want to yawn close your muff’. If it opens shaytaan enters. When one yawns with their mouth open shaytaan mocks the Muslim and draws similitudes to donkeys!
7. To have images in the same room as you praying. Especially not to have images in front of you whilst you’re praying. It is haram to hang pictures up of people, animals and other animation. Hung pictures scare angels away.
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The angels do not enter any house in which there is an image.”
8. Cracking knuckles (inter-locking fingers and snapping) in the salah. Some do this as habit, but it is makhrooh to do so during salah.
9. Wearing garments that are heavily printed with strips or gaudy designs. Anything that will distract you in salah or is a distraction to others praying near you.
10. Disliked to wear pure red garments for salah.
11. When descending for sujud one shouldn’t pick up their garments or hair. It’d be better to leave it be.
12. It’s disliked to remove anything attached on the forehead from doing sujood. This is more so if the salah is prayed outside, the forehead should be wiped clean after the salah.
13. Praying in the presence of food – meaning if food is being served and you’re hungry it is disliked to pray on an empty stomach! One should prepare themselves before the adhaan is read, by eating or using the bathroom etc…
Narrated Anas: Allah’s Messenger (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “If supper is brought (and the prayer is ready) start with it (the food) before you pray the Maghrib (prayer)”. (Bukhari and Muslim)
May Allah give us all the ability to have khushoo (tranquility, concentration etc…) in our salah, ameen. May our salah be a bright light for us on the Day of Judgement when we cross the bridge, ameen. May we be of those whom Allah is pleased with and we with him, Ameen.
