A reminder Insh’Allah

Ali Asad Chandia’s Address to the Community After his Release

10/12/2005

In such trials, my brothers and sisters I feel obliged to remind ourselves of some important issues, for indeed reminder benefits the believers.

We must remember that whatever happens in this world is decreed by Allah  and has wisdom behind it. A human being may or may not understand that wisdom. It is our job to submit to this Divine decree. And this decree was written 50,000 years before Allah created the heavens and the earths. The prophet (SAW) said, “Allah had written the ordained measures (and due proportions) of the creation, fifty thousand years before the creation of the heavens and the earth” [Muslim] If Allah Subhana Wa Taala has decreed that I spend rest of my life in a prison cell then I see no other option but to submit to what my Creator has decreed and I ask Allah to give me patience.

With that we must also remember that everything that happens to a believer is at the end noting but good. But at times due to our short sightedness and lack of Eman we forget this reality. A person may deem something as being good which in reality is bad for him and he may dislike something as bad which in reality is good for him. “It may happen that you hate a thing which is good for you, and it may happen that you love a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows, you know not.” (2:216)

At the end every matter is in favor of the believer. The Prophet  said, “Strange is the affair of the Mu’min (the believer), verily all his affairs are good for him. If something pleasing befalls him he thanks (Allah) and it becomes better for him. And if something harmful befalls him he is patient (Saabir) and it becomes better for him. And this is only for the Mu’mmin.” [Muslim]

A Muslim must also remember that it is an ongoing Sunnah of Allah that He tests the believers and there is there is no change in His Sunnah. The Prophets and Messengers passed through the most severe tests. “Or think you that you will enter Paradise without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you? They were afflicted with severe poverty and ailments and were so shaken that even the Messenger and those who believed along with him said, “When (will come) the Help of Allah?” Yes! Certainly, the Help of Allah is near!.” (2:214) Indeed I am being tested and I ask Allah to keep me steadfast and help me pass this test.

In any situation if the results don’t turn out to be as we expect them to turn out we must not have any ill thoughts about our Creator. Without doubt, He is the Merciful Lord. The Prophet (S) said, “Verily, Allah created, on the same very day when He created the heavens and the earth, one hundred parts of mercy. Every part of mercy is coextensive with the space between the heavens and the earth and He out of this mercy endowed one part to the earth and it is because of this that the mother shows affection to her child and even the beasts and birds show kindness to one another and when there would be the Day of Resurrection, Allah would make full (use of Mercy).” [Muslim]

We must also remember that no matter how enormous this world may seem, a true believer still considers himself incarcerated and follows the commands of his Lord alone. Only those who are short sighted and do not understand the reality of this temporary life see this world as a place where they are not sanctioned by any commands from their Creator. Did not Allah’s messenger (S) days? “The world is a prison-house for a believer and Paradise for a non-believer.” [Muslim].

At the end my beloved brothers and sisters, know the statement of Prophet  who said, “And know, that if the entire nation got together to benefit you in some way, they could never benefit you at all except for that which Allah had already decreed for you. And, if they all got together to harm you in some way, they could do you no harm except for that which Allah had already decreed for you. The pens have been lifted, and the tablets have dried.” [At-Tirmidhi, and he rated it Sahih]

Finally, I thanks Allah that he made me a Muslim and that he gave me brothers and sisters who have stood next to me in this test. I ask Allah to bless you and your families and that he gives you goodness in this life and in the hereafter.
